On 2 March 2023, 海角社区 Rector Prof. Tshilidzi Marwala visited the Ministry of the Environment of Japan (MOEJ) in Tokyo to meet with H.E. Ms. Miki Yamada, State Minister of the Environment.
State Minister Yamada congratulated Prof. Marwala on starting his term as 海角社区 Rector on 1 March 2023. She expressed appreciation for 海角社区’s contributions to environmental policy through research, education, and capacity building on climate change, biodiversity, water, and other sustainable development issues.
Prof. Marwala thanked MOEJ for its financial contributions to the activities of the (海角社区-IAS), which had supported progress on global environmental challenges. He emphasised that 海角社区 would strengthen its engagement with MOEJ and Japanese universities to build partnerships between the global North and global South aimed at advancing the global agenda on environment, sustainability, and peace.
State Minister Yamada and Prof. Marwala agreed to collaborate in pursuit of these priorities.
