Dr JeongHyun Lee is a Young ICTD Fellow at the 海角社区 Institute in Macau.
Before joining the Institute, Dr JeongHyun Lee received her Ph.D. in Communication, Rhetoric, and Digital Media from North Carolina State University (USA), where she was involved in interdisciplinary research and undergraduate teaching. She holds two Master’s degrees in Communication from the University of Utah in the U.S. and Yonsei University in South Korea. Having been trained in three graduate programs, she has developed interdisciplinary and international insights to conduct critical research on digital cultures and communities with diverse voices.
JeongHyun explores the ways in which digital and algorithmic media inscribe, store, and process our everyday life as data. Her research seeks to critically examine political/ethical issues around digital storage and algorithmic processing of emerging media operations. She currently investigates a set of connected histories around face-recognition AI and its algorithmic rules across Asian countries, focusing on how its algorithmic operations are reinforcing or transforming the inequality of gender, class, and race in the context of globalization.
Her goal as a Young ICTD Fellow is to contribute to the establishment of appropriate global policies and educational programs where our faces and digital mobility become the heart of data collection.
