SCIENCE TALK: Investing in Nature: The Role of Wetlands as Natural Climate Solutions

Scientific Advancements In Delivering Accurate Estimates Of Carbon Accumulation And GHG Fluxes From Wetlands

Nations worldwide are investing in nature to meet their greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets under the Paris Agreement. Effectively implemented, these natural climate solutions can contribute significantly to environmental sustainability, economic resilience, and social equity, paving the way for a thriving green economy. However, uncertainties around carbon sequestration and GHG fluxes complicate the inclusion of these natural climate solutions in national inventories. In this talk, Professor Irena Creed will draw from Canada's experience to explore the potential of natural and restored wetlands on agricultural landscapes as crucial carbon sinks and GHG reducers. Her presentation will showcase scientific advancements in delivering accurate estimates of carbon accumulation and GHG fluxes from wetlands. Beyond carbon capture, she will assess the broader ecosystem services provided by wetlands, such as hydrological regulation, water purification, and biodiversity enhancement, while evaluating the potential synergies and tensions of these services. This research will not only inform national policy and improve Canada’s GHG reporting but also guide the development of carbon offset protocols that fully recognize wetlands' contribution to climate mitigation. Opportunities for collaboration will be highlighted to advance understanding, share data, and create predictive models for the role of wetlands in climate solutions worldwide.
