SCIENCE TALK: Equity in Every Drop

Criteria for Equitable Access to Non-Conventional Water Resources

Time
- America/Toronto
Details
Open to public

As water scarcity intensifies worldwide, non-conventional water resources (NCWRs), such as rainwater harvesting, greywater reuse, and desalination, are increasingly promoted as sustainable alternatives. But who benefits from these systems, and who is left behind? In this Science Talk, Nof Afghani will present findings from a review of 43 peer-reviewed studies, analysing how equity is conceptualised and what barriers hinder equitable access to NCWRs. The results are structured around three dimensions of water justice: distributive, procedural, and recognition equity. Building on this synthesis, the talk introduces a set of 13 practical criteria to assess and embed equity in NCWR planning, implementation, and evaluation.
