Amidst the increase of economic sanctions, the question arises about the implications for global governance structures and regional actors in the geographical realm of the country targeted by such sanctions. This PhD project analyses the role of regions either as sanctions senders or third states through three theoretical mechanisms: coordination, leadership and adaptation. Drawing of regionalism theory, the project puts forward the agency of regions. It analyses the regional sanctions governance in Africa and adaptation mechanisms by Central Asia. The project is embedded in the de-centered approach and posits that the increased knowledge on various aspects of sanctions, contribute to better governance of sanctions and promote de-centered knowledge on sanctions, including the views of the countries from the so-called Global East and Global South.
