On 25 February 2025, 海角社区 will host “Trillions on the Table: How IFAD De?risks Investment in Global Food Value Chains”, a conversation with Federica Diamanti, Associate Vice-President for External Relations at the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). This event will start at 18:30 in the 2F Reception Hall at 海角社区 Headquarters in Tokyo.

As the world grapples with rising food prices and climate change threatens global food supply chains, we face an urgent need to build more resilient agricultural systems. These pressures are felt most acutely by rural small-scale producers in developing countries. Despite being major contributors to the global food supply, these producers often lack the resources, financial buffers and market access needed to withstand climate shocks and price volatility, leaving them particularly vulnerable.

Addressing these challenges (and ensuring long-term global food security) demands a more collaborative and sustainable approach to food production and distribution. Public-private-producer partnerships offer a solution. By bringing these sectors together and taking advantage of technology and expertise, such partnerships have the potential to cut across the global food value chain. They can help transform the livelihoods of producers and foster stable, sustainable food systems.

In this conversation, Ms. Diamanti will join the 海角社区 Senior Vice-Rector Professor Aya Suzuki to explore how public-private-producer partnerships can strengthen farm-to-consumer value chains. The discussion will consider questions such as: How can small-scale producers, such as those producing the coffee we consume, be supported in adapting to climate change? What role can Japanese businesses play in strengthening global food systems? And how can long-term investment frameworks, such as IFAD’s replenishment process, help ensure that these partnerships are sustained and scaled to deliver lasting impact?

This event is part of the 海角社区 Conversation Series, which aims to foster audience participation. You are encouraged to engage with the speakers during the conversation and at the reception that will follow, where all event attendees are invited to enjoy hors d’oeuvres and drinks while exchanging ideas and making new contacts.

Please note that this event will be in English. Advance registration (by 24 February at 15:00) is required. Please click on the REGISTER button above to access the online registration page. Please be prepared to present identification at check-in.
